We decided it was time to work on the tans so we headed to the market in Cartegena and got ourselves on a boat to Playa Blanca - a stretch of beach about 40mins from Cartegena.

It was an interesting ride. We were packed into a little boat loaded with locals and produce for the islands and our captain didn't spare the horses getting there. Im not sure how but the passengers next to us had trays of eggs on their knees which somehow managed to get there intact, which was miracle given we spent as much time thrown out of our seats as in them.

But the wild ride was worth it. The beach was gorgeous. We soon found someone who spoke english who was also staying at Hugos - a hut and a shelter with some hammocks and tents run by a local by the same name. No electricity or running water, but the sea was warm and there were plenty of trees to shelter under. There were about 8 others staying and after putting up our tent and airbed we were soon getting to know Hugo and the other guests and enjoying a huge fruit platter in the shade.

The next few days consisted of some swimming and snorkeling, reading, eating delicious fresh fish that was caught that day, having a few drinks and working on the tan. Apart from the rooster which insisted on announcing the sunrise at 3am, it was fantastic. The company was good and the sunsets were wonderful. We learned a bit more spanish, a couple more drinking games and definately did some relaxing.

But after a great three days on the beach we were looking forward to getting sand and salt free and heading to Santa Marta further up the coast to check out the Tyrona national park nearby.
