We quickly moved on to Chicago by Greyhound. A direct trip, even so the journey was 21 hours long, and less than comfortable. Sleeping in the tiny seats was difficult, not to mention the company on the bus...packed full with the American version of our chavs, it was literally like being on the Jerry Springer show, nightmare.

Chicago was a big surprise for us, very different to what we had in mind. Very clean, loads to do and sooo quiet (it was labor day weekend). The beaches on Lake Michigan are right by the city centre, crystal clear rivers running through the city sky scrapers.

This was a 2 day stop over before heading north to the Boundary Waters area on the Canadian border. Had a great time, much better than NY!
