A day of snow....

We drove back to Lake Louise...with the most amazing views of the Rockies getting ever closer, and a moose crossing on the specially built animal crossing over the freeway. Stopped in Lake Louise village and had an amazing bagel for breaky...then it was on to the icefield parkway. Now this drive proved to be the best of the trip. Good roads and amazing views, not surprising since it is supposed to be one of the best drives in the world! The drive started with our park passes being checked...yes you have to pay for this amazing drive...but its well worth it. Then we found our first glacier - crows foot glacier. Had to stop to take pictures..of course! It used to look like a crows foot..till it lost one of ots toes...still amazing though...with a green lake of meltwater below. As we drove further in...the glaciers became more frequent and more amazing...the thickness of the ice is unbelievable...50m+ in places and 100s of years old. Its a way cool sight. Then we arrived at the icefield centre, a very touristy info centre about the Columbia icefield....with impressive views of a glacier and the edge of the actual icefield...which in case you were wondering is one of the biggest icefields south of the artic circle! We decided to splash out...and be oh so touristy...and go on the actual glacier. How many opportunities do you get to walk on a glacier?? We paid our big bucks then climbed on a bus full of typical tourists! We drove the short way to the edge of the glacier...with our little guided talk along the way...parked on a car park that has fallen apart (probably on purpose so they can get people to pay lots of money to go there) and got on the coolest bus ever! It had wheels bigger than a tractor...and was specially designed for glacier driving !!! (designed in Calgary...it seems it does have a purpose afterall!) After a steep 30 degree drive (we have done more than that in our car!!) we had to clean the wheels so as not to damage the ice...as if hundreds of tourists tramping on the ice everyday is not going to do any harm!!! Then we were on the glacier! We were allowed out...it was pretty cool to be standing on an ancient moving glacier! Did the touristy thing and took loads of pics...fell in a few holes...of melting ice...and tried to put some ice down Neils top! Then it was back on the bus and our adventures were over...did get to see the ice melting at a great rate of knots on the way back...aparantly its shrinking back lots...can't think why!
Then we drove further on...to find a picnic bench...the glaciers seemed a little insignificant now...after walking on one! Had a picnic by a bubbling pool...and according to Neil we experienced the best pit toilets in the whole of North America!

Drove to Jasper...which was minging...in case you are thinking of going there...couldn't even find a decent shop! (Go to Banff its way better!) Decided to head onwards as no where to stay in Jasper...and on leaving we saw bear number 3. Now its easy to find bears in this part of the world...just look for all the cars at the side of the road and the people looking very confused! We stopped and spotted the huge bear in the trees straight away...its easy when you know what you are looking for! I did confuse them all by pointing out that there could be 2 of them in there!???
After getting lost a few times...we arrived in Mount Robson National park and found a campsite...the sites are cool...turn up...pick your spot and pay only $15 when they come round later. Built a fire with all our left over wood...ate wierd chicken soup. Does anyone else think that the ingriedients of potatoes...noodles and chicken and mushroom soup are wierd??? Was edible at least...Neil would say it was perfectly normal and delicious!
Didn't rain...wayhey...so we built the biggest fire ever with all our left over wood..and drank our beer. (actually the people in the next site had the biggest fire ever...with their whole forest of wood). Watched the fire burn out..eventually...and went to bed in our cosy little tent...its cold in the woods at night in the mountains...in case you didn't know!
