Our last week of being spoilt rotten!

After our busy weekend away, we figured that granny and Sid probably needed a break from us, so we arranged to go out with Julie for the evening.
Had a fun evening...and as usual we were spoilt rotten! We were taken out for dinner at a cool little pub, where we drank loads of beer (actually i think it was Tim who drank all the beer!!)...and ate burgers and calamari. Then we went to the flicks and watched the new pirates of the caribbean movie. The movie was great...absolutely hilarious in places! It was very late when the movie ended but Julie kindly offered to drive us home. A very enjoyable evening...and its great to do something normal like go to the cinema!

The next day was a busy day again. Tim, Neil, me and grannie were all driving up island to Nanaimo, to see where Neil worked when he was out here 6 years ago. Now as usual we tried to get far too much into one day...and things didn't quite happen as planned....but were fun anyway!
We stopped at Pioneer house for breakfast...an amazing log cabin restaurant....which had a huge menu of mouthwatering stuff....the breakfast menu was big enough....so you can imagine how long it took me to decide what to have! Wish i had decided a little quicker tho...as the service was a little slow to say the least! The food was amazing...when we got it...but it did take them nearly an hour to serve us!! And my poor tummy was rumbling by that point...i had been up since 6am!
When we had eventually finished breaky we set off to visit the farm where neil used to work!
On the way we drove through Chemainus, a cool town, with murals on every wall! Didn't have much time to check it out, but hopefully got some cool pictures...its one of those place to go back to!
Arrived a little early for our lunch date...which incidentally no-one wanted as we were all still full from breakfast! Ooops, so we went to the pub! Well what else do you do to kill a little time? This was the pub that Neil used to hang out in all those years ago...and i can see why! You would have thought you were back in England! It was just like a little english country pub! Had a serious lack of english beer mind....but it did have good canadian beer and a fascinating menu so i will let it off!
After our sneaky quick drink we headed off for lunch and to meet Betty and family,...oh yeah and her chickens....and musn't forget her killer monstrous dog either!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately Betty had prepared loads of food, which we all felt oblidged to eat! The food was lovely...specially the veggie lasagne...but we really should have had out breaky sooner! Betty even suggested that we go to the very pub we had just been to for pudding...but no-one had thew guts to say we had already been! Plus i saw the size of the puddings....and there was no way i could face one of them...not sure even Neil could have!!!!!!
After a guided tour of the farm...and all the cute little baby chickens...oh yeah and being malled by the dog!! Im sure it meant no harm...but it was a big dog! We had to be off because Neil wanted to take us to Newcastle island, and time was running out
Arrived in Nanaimo, where you get the ferry to Newcastle island and god knows how many other little islands around the big island! Had quite a walk to find where to get the ferry....but it meant got to see some of Nanaimo harbour...which incidentally was very pretty. The next boat to the island left at 4pm, which wasn't going to give us very long on the island...but Neil really wanted to take us...so it was decided. I was a little worried that we were wearing Grannie out, specially as she was still recovering from her heart attack...but off we went. Tim thoughtfully paid for us to go across - thanks Tim - the trip was kinda cool. The island was really remote and full of little walks, the only thing on the place was a campsite and a little restaurant, the island is actually owned by the first nation people...and even had totems to prove it! Had a little walk...but grannie was tired as i siuspected...and had ice cream on her mind! It seems grannie likes ice cream as much as Neil does...must be where he gets it from! So we stopped and sat on a bench....Neil and I were really selfish and wandered off, leaving Tim bored...sorry Tim! The island was cool, but i think we would all have liked to see a little more of it....its another one to re-visit! One day!
Then it was the long drive home....Neil is getting used to this driving lark...im kinda glad as we are hiring a car soon....to do millions of miles...and it means we might arrive back in one piece...oh yeah and i might not get shouted at too much for being a rubbish navigator...or naff-igator as neil calls me!
A very long day...but way fun...or at least my belly thought so anyway!

Its Thursday...... We decided we were gonna head into Sidney to use the internet to book car rental and accomodation for vancouver the following week, after a free 30mins in the library we then proceded to discover every internet cafe in town had closed down..... so with food on my mind we went to smittys for a lushous platter to share. Afterwards we used the internet in the local hotel to get the things done we needed to......
After supper Sid gave us a lift into sidney with tim so we could have a few drinks, we stopped at a pub we noticed earlier.....the Charles Dickens.... a trully american bar, sat and had a few pints watching the baseball, we decided it was time to move on, the barman warning us we'd be back. And believe it or not after a pint in one of the closing bars on the waterfront we were.... until one in the morning when we decided it was definately time for a taxi back.......

Friday!!!!!!! Granny dropped us off at Julies early where we had coffee and a chat prior to using her computer to get this log up-to-date, I spent most of the morning play fighting with the kids whilst amy typed. Sid picked us up around where we met up with granny tohave luch. Had our first Tim Horton experience with soup and a sandwhich and tim bits to finsh, tim bits being the donut holes........ yummy!!!!!!!
In the evening tim cooked us and dorothy a curry, tho not the hot one he intended as we forgot to buy the chillies, after which we enjoyed a few glasses of wine before bed.

Saturday....... Woke up and headed out to buy picnic for rest of the days festivities.
Went to grannies friends sues' house, an amazing home in the country i stayed in for a weekend last time i was here. I thought amy would love the timber framed cottage with squillions of windows looking out onto the surrounding forest and she did, we enjoyed tea, cookie and choccy cake in the garden.
In the late afternoon granny took us to Butchards Gardens for the fireworks, the gardens are emmaculate, with hundreds of colourful plants. we had a picnic on the lawns with all the family members there, then the fireworks followed....... Still the best i've ever seen, all set to music with moving parts, rain over a lake with the loch ness monster gliding through, a bee hive with thousands of bees flying out across the nights sky, their buzz was deafening. unbelievable to think it was all done in fireworks. Afterwards to avoid the rush to the cars we walked around the gardens again, this time tho they were all illuminated... looked incredible!!!!!!

Sunday - last day at grannies.
Today was something we'd been waiting for, Greg and dorothy were to take us out on the boat around the islands near sidney....... After what seemed an age getting ready, mainly due to a bottle of cranberry juice smashing on the floor and a hugh clean up operation, we headed out. Once at the boat ramp dorothy atempted to get the boat fired up whilst Greg parked up with little success, however once out on the water it took greg ages to get it going whilst we attempted to row, extremely poorly. Once the boat was going, we whizzed across the water, passing rocky outcrops full of birds and sandbanks covered in harbour seals. After a bout an hour it was time to find an island for lunch, so we slowly went around the islands trying to find a non private or populated beach. Once we found one we pulled up and had our picnic of leftovers from the day before and a couple of cans of beer. After luch we explored the island on foot and played silly games. One involved me and tim catapulting each over across the beach using driftwood and another stick fighting with enormous driftwood logs.
We then headed back to grannies where we had to get are stuff straight for hitting the road again. Granny had prepared a hugh roast beef dinner and several desserts as a farewell. Was amazing food, scrumtous chocolate and cream cake, trifle, and butter cookies.... yummy!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone who entertained , treated and put up ith us whilst on the island, we had a great time and it was real nice to have some home comforts.
