Sassafran Mountains - The border between north and south carolina is seperated in large parts by a mountain range and is about 1.5hrs from my cousins place so we entered the sassafran parking lot into the GPS and followed it through smalltown USA until we hit the mountain road. As the address was a location on the highway an address could not be entered and as such we ended up at the parking lot on the other end of the trail, we discovered this after walking a steep slope up to the lauren valley parking lot (which turned out to be a sliproad up to the car park). In the car park was a map which identified the sassafran lookout we were looking for, so turning around and taking a fork in the round we found the single lane mountain road to the sassafran lookout. Arriving at the car park we took a walk over to the lookout, this was a wooden platform which had been built on the edge of the clifface where there was a small clearing of trees allowing a view across the range to be seen. As we stood on the platform we suddenly realised how unexpectedly quiet it was, you would normally expect to hear wind, trees moving or animals, but there was just nothing. After standing on the platform for a short while i took a walk up the short path to the clearing on the other side of the parking lot before heading back to the truck. We then had the reverse ride this time down the mountain road, which for some reason seemed a lot more winding and for only the second time in my life i felt car sick (note to self, windy roaded car journeys make me car sick).
