Wednesday found us back on the road to Alaska. First stop was the ferry across the Yukon River. The vehicle in front of us was carrying an outhouse and pulling an ATV (Canadian camper?). On the far side of the river, Warren stopped so I could take a picture of fish wheels, a way of fishing.

The fall colors going back across the Top of the World Highway were just astounding, even though the condition of the road hadn't improved any over the last few days. The highway has a 9% grade approaching the highest point.

The border guard for the U.S. was a bit friendlier than his counterpart from the other day. A few questions, checking the license plate and our passports, and we were on our way.

We stopped for lunch in a gravel pit a ways up the highway toward Eagle and I found another one of those signs to take a picture of - maybe we were just tired, but we all got a giggle out of it.

We stopped in Tok for diesel and I couldn't resist taking a picture of the car wash. Warren told me later that the station will let you wash your rig for free if you fill up with gas or diesel.

We stopped for the night at the Eagle Trail State Recreation Site, an absolutely beautiful campground with 35 spaces. There was only one other camper when we pulled through to check it out and we had a cul-de-sac all to ourselves. Warren built a fire, Vicki made bbq, and we had a beautiful sunset.

As we prepared for bed Warren came in and said he thought we were going to see northern lights. Back outside to stand with our necks craned to see the display that seemed just for us. To the naked eye, the lights appeared faint and white. I wasn't able to get pictures with my camera but Warren did. The lights, to the camera, were actually green. Absolutely astounding and another checkmark off my list of things to see in Alaska.
