we left the farm 4 munites ahead of schedule after a nice breakfast and a gift from the lady who ran the b&b - a compact mirror made of thousand year old bog oak, they're very pretty! we drove through birr and straight up to athlone, then through roscommon and longford towns to carrick-on-shannon where we stopped for a walk around, got some massive soda bread rolls at the farmers market the got back on the road. we did a bit of a detour into the lough key national park to see a castle on an island. we had a refreshing walk in the rain then got back in the car and took some minor roads towards county mayo. we did another detour to a lookout over a lough (lake) where we managed to pass 2 tractors on narrow roads (twice each!) out next stop was in westport, a very pretty harbour town where we were planning on staying for the night. but since we were there relatively early and the next town was "only 40 minutes away" we decided to push on. we drove through some beautiful scenery in conemarra national park but the rpads were so awful that it took over an hour. we eventually arrived at the old monastary hostel in letterfrack, there was only one other guest there and 2 people learning how to run the place while the owner went on holidays. it was very nice but a little bit ecentric! there whole place was lit with lamps and candles. the bathroom was lit with blue fairy lights and an open fire place (next to the sofa) and had a classical music radio station playing. the showers were pathetic, if you can imagine an amount of water less than a dribble then that would be almost the amount of water coming out of the shower heads! but apart from that is was grand! the owner had the mos random collection of stuff... a waterlogged piano outside with a boot on top used as a vase for a dried out tree! (just to menion a few)
