i have finally adjusted to the weather here for the most part and i can wear shorts and a tshirt when its 58 degrees (13c for Europeans) and still be warm. hell i was toting a keg down the road a few days ago (job related) and was actually sweating when it was in the mid 50's. this is a good thing now but when i get back to Thailand i will be sweating for sure.
fatigue has definitely set in as i have just finished my 59th day in a row of cooking which is pretty tough since I am on my fight 11-12 hours a day. you don't really realize how much days off help your state of mind AND your body until you deprive yourself of them. make no mistake, this is a decision i have made since i am doing my damnedest to bring in as much cash as possible before my departure date. 168 hours in the last pay period..........i long for a day spent sleeping lol.
anyway, enough complaining. things are relatively good here. the weather has been really good since about late June. this place is much more pleasant when the sun is out and the wind is not howling strong enough to blow tents across the campgrounds and then across the road (it happens). the good weather has also brought in a lot of the tourists so its good for business which in turn is good for my job security.
I have bought my tickets outta Alaska. I am returning to Chicago for an extended visit (2 weeks) for the first time in about 5 years. there are many nieces and nephews that i need to see plus many friends with whom i have mostly lost touch. 5 years is a long time and I'm not sure how much i will have in common with all the old faces but it will be OK just to rehash old times as one tends to do when seeing old friends after a long hiatus. I will be heading back to Thailand on September 10th and i cannot wait.
my other job (scuba diving) is going well in my absence. the company i work for www.khaolakscubaadventures.com has gone through a major overhaul beginning with management and trickling all the way down to logo design and internal databases. anyway, when this sort of thing happens it is common to get rid of most of the old staff just because they are used to doing things the old way etc etc so i wasn't too sure if i had a job at the same shop for this upcoming season.
well there is double good news.....or maybe triple. i have not only been brought back on for the next season but have been given the trip leader position for one of our 4 day live aboard boats. i was trip leader off and on last season for our day trip boat but the money and the diving is not nearly as good (day trips don't go to some more remote sites). this year i may be making triple what i did last season. somewhere between double and triple if things go well. I've also been offered a work permit which would make me a LEGAL worker in Thailand which is not an easy thing to obtain when working in diving. yay Neal lol.
all is well on the northern front and this summer is ticking by as i impatiently wait for it. life is remarkably on track and lining up better then i had hoped for which is a rare event indeed. when things go this well, i become a bit paranoid and start looking for the unseen booby trap that will fuck it all up. maybe this time there is no booby trap
