i have been told that my blog is boring now that i'm in alaska.  well i apologize but there is not much that i can do to liven things up really. i suppose i could lie and make up all kinds of fun stories but i find that my life is crazy enough as it is without the embelishments.  a small piece of news has arisen and that is that my tent was robbed while i was at work the other day.  there was not much in there to be stolen since i take my laptop and my SLR camera to work with me everyday but unfortunately my large north face backpack was stolen.  I am a bit heartbroken since we have been together for over 14 years.  we have traveled the world together and i have strapped that poor fucker onto every conceivable mode of transportation known to man.  we had quite the adventure together and some worthless sack of shit has stolen him from me.  I have begun to scout out a replacement on the internet but it feels like cheating on my girlfriend as i look at all of these new bags with their high tech, load bearing gizmos

its a sad thing, i have traveled the world and been to some of the poorest countries in the world. i have backpacked through slums and been stranded in indian train stations but it took coming back to america for someone to rob me.  people always say how great america is and how its the best country on earth but i will tell you the truth right here and now.....i feel safer overseas, both personally and with my belongings and this is just a fact.  go lock your doors and buy another gun for "home protection" and tell me how great it is to live where you do because at this point, it is becoming a very tough sell.

on to another note........at first i found the mild racism of my grandmother a bit funny.  i mean at her age (almost 90) there is no changing her attitudes towards the world because she is definitely not learning any new tricks so it was mostly a matter of shaking my head and laughing a bit.  the few times that i tried pointing out this flaw in her character and how she might want to work on it she disagreed with my observation with such comments as "shvartza's (yiddish word for black people) are nice but they smell bad.....and are lazy".  anyways, i knew she was a bit of a racist but she has now twice spoken ill of my fiance and of my impending marriage.  the first slight was expected since i was pretty sure that IM is not jewish and this was not going to sit well but the second one......wait let me quote here....."you know neal, all they want is to come to america, you know that dont you?" was kind of out of left field and was even more offensive then the first.

My grandmother is of the belief that #1 america is the best country in the world and that #2 all other peoples want to come live in america due to its general kick assness.  we got into a nice little argument that was based on her belief that IM wants to come to america to live (now thats a good one) and that I need to come back to america and get a real job because i cant just trapse around the world having fun forever, eventually it has to end.  my response to this line of thought was "why?".   Why come back, why does my lifestyle have to end and i be enslaved by a weekly paycheck?  I have been doing quite nicely for the last 36 years so why stop now?  there was no real answer on her part other then "you know better then to live outside of america, you have to come back sometime and start a real job"..................HAHAHAHAHA.  I no longer have any respect for this woman since she obviously has no respect for me or the very nice young woman who I am engaged to.  at this point in time i am seriously questioning why i even speak to her anymore.

i occasionally start thinking about leaving alaska early and going back to thailand to be with IM.  I suppose i will stick it out the rest of the season here but it would be so nice to cut and run back to the girlie. it would be very feasible to head back to thailand with $12,000 instead of $17,000 or whatever the numbers may be but the problem with that would be the inevitable burning of the bridges here in homer and that is none too cool.  its nice to have a job already lined up when you get here and not have to worry about hunting around for employment.  i want to go home :(

nothing too interesting going on around here at the moment.  saw some orcas swimming by the to other day from the restaurant that i work in which was pretty cool.  there are still the occasional otters swimming around and of course the bald eagles are everywhere.  alaska, great for wildlife thats for sure.  the tourist season is finally starting to pick up a bit after a very slow start so hopefully things start coming together and we have a good couple of months.

solstice is almost here which is a pretty big deal in alaska.  at the moment the sun goes down here in Homer around midnight and starts to rise again at about 4am.  technically the sun is down for about 4 hours but there is still enough light in the sky to read a book outside all night.  people always say that they would have a real problem adjusting to this and could never fall asleep but i have never had a problem and sleep quite well.  anyway, happy summer solstice everyone!!

it seems i may actually have people traveling to thailand for my wedding which is kinda surprising but very cool if it all works out.  the parents are obviously trying to make it but a few friends have made inquiries on dates and airfare so we shall see if i actually have some folks from the hometown attending.  i think the idea of an epic bachelor party is drawing my old friends from college but thats pretty understandable since after all, they are a bunch of drunken hooligans..........hooligans with a college diploma but still hooligans none the less.

a good friend of mine just got a kick ass job working in Macau (the las vegas of asia) for cirque de solei as their safety diver.  apparently most of the show revolves around water, with huge tanks for the performances.  well his job is to sit on the bottom in scuba gear in case of an accident which may be slightly boring but pretty fucking cool if you ask me........not to mention he is getting paid a good $5000 a month to do this.  not rich by most peoples standards but in the diving community this is big money lol.

well i have been sitting for about 10 minutes trying to think of more to write but at the moment i am a bit stumped.  i apologize if this is not exactly exciting stuff but what can i do to spice things up when i spend 12 hours a day in a kitchen.  i will not demean you nor this blog by writing about cutting fish and opening oysters so i am left with very little material.  anyways, enjoy your summer days and you will hear from me in a few weeks.

Neal I'm so sad to hear about the backpack. It's like losing a good friend. So many countries together.....all those patched that I sewed on for you. Double bummer. When you get new ones, I'll sew them on for you.
