Finally i have achieved something new and fresh in my life and that is the midsummer adventure.  For those of you who are not completely familiar with me (and fucking shame on you for THAT) my summer months are spent slaving away in various kitchens across the arctic expanse of alaska but this summer is a little different because this summer i have been able to break away and take a week off to go see some concerts by the newly reunited band phish which just makes me happy as a clam.

When the band announced their unretirement the first thing i said was "oh shit" because i did not know how i was going to swing going to shows in the summer while also working my usual ridiculous schedule.  the idea of not going never even crossed my mind, it was all concentrated on HOW i was going to pull it off....it was never an IF.  so all this being said, i bought my tickets back in march when they went on sale and have been waiting impatiently for 4 glorious days of music ever since.

on the day of my flight back to the homeland (chicago) I awoke a bit early and began my hitch hiking adventure out to anchorage which is about 250 miles away through some of the most beautiful roadways in america.  my flight didnt leave until 9:30 that night but i wanted to make sure that i had enough time to get all the way to the airport.  hitch hiking can take quite a bit of time when the conditions are not right so it was better to be safe then sorry.  in retrospect its a bit silly since i got to anchorage with just two rides, with the second guy being nice enough to drop me a the front door of the airport.

the flights were uneventful as usual.  i truly believe that i enter some sort of time warp when getting on these long flights because everything just seems distorted and then the flight is suddenly over and it never seems like 14 or 15 hours.  uneventful is the way to go when it comes to flying......when you've had an eventful flight it usually means your body is scattered across the countryside so i'll happily take boring and uneventful just so long as it gets me to my desintation safe and sound which was the case this time around.

my dad was nice enough to come pick me up from the airport and then it was off to my favorite pizza place for a little reaquainting with real pizza, not this horrible super thin crust shit that is being passed off as pizza.  i firmly believe that every pizza operator should spend some time in chicago and check out all the wonderful pizza parlous that we have and take some of what they learned back to their shops so they can make a decent product which doesnt taste like crap.

after the pizza it was some time with the family as much of the clan showed up at the parents house for a bbq in my honor.  I was only going to be home for 1 day before i went on my 4 day tour with phish so the only feasible way to see a large number of family and friends was to invite them to a shindig which is a bit embarrasing but its nice to see everyone and to see that tthey are doing well.  my 95 year old grandmother even flew in from florida to see the prodigal grandchild return from the orient which was very cool since i hadnt seen her in a number of years and she's not getting much younger no matter how hard we hope for it.  get in the visits while you can because you never know when it will be the last parting and you never expected it to happen.

That night, after everyone had left for their own beds, steve (my friend from the college days)
and i headed out into the early morning darkness in search of the various on ramps and freeways that would leave us to western pennsylvania where the first show was quickly approaching and would launch into blissful mayhem oh so shortly
