well its been a bit of time since my last post and the last you heard from me i was wandering indonesia like a jew in the desert.  well i finally made my way to jakarta and got back to my comfort zone of thai food and thai girls which is always a good thing.  the only thing worth mentioning about this period was that while i was enjoying my carmel frappachino from the starbucks in the jakarta airport, i stumbled across a duty free store that sold nothing but shark fins.  now im not sure if you all are familiar with the disgusting, unethical and downright evil harvesting methods for shark fins but i'll just leave it at "it will make your stomach turn" and leave it at that.  unfortunatley its not illegal everywhere in the world and once again the chinese tourist has created a market for unsustainable animal products. what is wrong with these people. i mean do they really think that bear gall bladders and shark fin soup will give them a hard on? i mean really? fucking go by some viagra and leave the god damn animals alone.

I came back to an overjoyed im and we promptly headed up to her home to see her family.  of course i swore that i would never get on a bus to isaan again but there i was on the 12 hour journey once more.  this trip was bad because we went 12 hours north and then had to switch buses to a local bus (read roosters and pigs as seat mates) to go the last 100 kilometers. i actually ended up about 20km from the laos border so there you go, more adventure for neal.

im's parents werent quite as down with the whole premarital thing under there roof so i resided in a pretty decent little resort down the road from their house. i was defiitely the only white guy for a lonnnnng way and there was nothing in english so it was just a blind roullete game as i pointed at something in thai (this was when im wasnt with me).   her family are corn farmers so i was spared the visit to the rice paddies and instead got to hang out in the corn fields which being from illinois really made me more comfortable.  all in all i got the feeling that the parents didnt exactly love the idea of their daughter dating me and when i asked im she exclaimed "how you know??!!!"  oh well, its not as if i will see them all that often

one of the nights we were there im asked me if it was ok if she stayed at her home that night to visit with some friends and be with her family...sure no problem see you in the morning have a good time.  flash forward to 6am as im comes in my room and plops into bed.  i cuddle up to her and then hear a noise and look up...her little sister is standing there and then jumps into bed and under the covers.  ok no problem we were just sleeping anyway. i lay my head back down and hear another noise and look up and its her friend who promptly climbs into bed.  so im laying there with these 3 girls and i get a whiff of something toxic. what the hell could that odor be?  if i had been fully awake i would have recognized it but alas i was half asleep and it took me a minute to place the odor of whiskey.  all 3 of them were completely bombed and i had to turn im's sleeping face away because the fumes were just too much for me to handle.

after about 5 days in isaan we were back on the bus and headed down to khao lak so i could get some diving in before i went back to america and also so i could pick up all my bags that i had left there when i headed to indonesia. we had a few nice days on the beach and although im was very worried about the ghosts (tsunami) she still managed to have a good time despite the spiritual harrasment.  i taught her how to jump through big waves and not get washed across the beach and after that she enjoyed it much more.

im glad to be getting out of thailand for awhile (other then missing im) because these constant protests are just really starting to annoy me.  the police refuse to show any control of the crowds and just let them do what they want?  can you imagine crowds shutting down airports for a week in america with no response from the police?  or completely shutting down traffic of a huge city while the police watched and did absolutely nothing.  the thais are completely incompetent when it comes to dealing with these people and dont understand the idea of tear gas and water cannons.  im tired of these people.
