so i am in kota kinabalau which is kinda the capital of a good chunk of borneo and fresh out of the cool of the mountains and the cloud rainforest.  it was so nice to get up there and out of the oppressive heat of the lower rainforest.  the national park we were in was shrouded in clouds most of the time and you could see your breath in mid afternoon which was just lovely.  me and tanner, one of my fellow traveling divers, went on a 10k hike through the forest the other day and it was pretty amazing to be in such a surreal world.  trying to get the mental picture of the species before we "came down from the trees" and trying to picture survival in such a wild and natural place.  we didnt see much wild life, it being a thick jungle and all but it was still a great hike and the temperature was conducive to a pleasant day.  we're flying back to thailand tomorrow and i have to admit that im looking forward to normal civilization a bit.  borneo is nice but the accomadations and the food is a bit taxing.  the biggest sport is trying to find food that they actually have.  the menu may list many different things but usually they are out of at least half of what they advertise.  my lasting memory of borneo will be "sorry, finished".  talk about frigging aggravating!  if you dont have it in stock dont advertise it.  one hostel we stayed at only had "watermelon, pineapple and banana" left from their 3 page menu.  common sense is a rare commodity here.

the diving has been great and the forest is amazing when you can actually get to it.  the eastern half of borneo has been clear cut for palm tree plantations (palm oil) so you drive hundreds of miles and all you see is palm trees and your only thought is what the land must have looked like before we got our hands on it.  its all kind of depressing and is enough to depress even the most chipper of souls.  you add to that and the constantly nagging english girl and its enough to drive me crazy.  we have decided that if you cut out the phrases "im cold, im hot, im tired, im hungry, i feel ill, this is rubbish, it tastes better back home" then Cara hasnt actually said anything in the 2 weeks we've been on the road.  the idea has been broached of leaving her dead body in the rain forest but she did descend back into civiiization safely and is in the city with us.....complaining about the heat and the food.

the trip is winding down now which is both good and bad.  the good part is that im running out of money and i cant really afford to stay out here much longer with out a much bigger source of income then i already have.  the bad part is of course having to work and slave in the kitchen all summer. i plan on getting 2 jobs this summer so i can afford to get some of the things i feel i need and want and still afford a whole year in thailand.  the other bad part is i  have once again met a very sweet and attractive thai girl.  you may see a pattern emerging here but what can i do?  her name is ninny (yeah i know its pretty funny) and she's a sweet heart and she is not happy at all that im going back to america for the summer.  another summer of long hours and scenic boredom.....well there is definitely worse ways to spend my life.
