ive only been here a few hours so this should be relatively brief. the first thing you notice though is that the countryside is considerably greener and more lush then that of cambodia that was only a few hundred meters away. i assume its because of better irrigation but for whatever reason, outside of saigon is emerald green from hill to hill. during the war there was a huge uproar about fighting in cambodia and troops in cambodia etc etc. did you know that saigon is only 18 kilometers from cambodia's border? jesus no wonder it was all so messed up.
when considering my trip to vietnam the war was of course in the back of my mind but i never really thought it would be much of a factor. its a bit different when you enter the country though....you cant help but to imagine 35 years ago and what it was all like. in the 18 kilometers i saw 6 military cemetaries, so im thinking that the war may prove to be more of an issue then i thought....at least in my own head.
one of the funnier things ive seen is that in the middle of all these fields and pastures you will see water buffalo heads sticking out of the ground. it seems that there are mud pits all around and the buffalo bury themselves up to their necks to cool off......a very surreal sight. another strange sight is the vietnamese girls who where these special gloves up to their armpits, and these special masks so that they dont get suntan. its funny how white people are trying to get dark and how dark people are trying to get white. what the hell is wrong with everyone?
