Day 072: 4.0 kms, 3 hours

Napoli, Vesuvius, Pompeii, Sorrento Coast, Salerno, Amalfi Coast, Caserta… all the "must see" spots of my Napoli Superhike are now finished—but there's no way I can end my hike now. Why? Because my “Superhike” is actually 4 hikes that still haven’t been connected to each other.

See, ever since I started used Google Maps to trace my hiking routes, I’ve had this thing about wanting to connect hikes to each other—I can’t stand to have two hiking segments close to each other but not connected.  And with Superhikes it’s an absolute must that all segments of the hike be connected in order to count.

And so today I’m going to start by connecting my Vila Literna-Aversa segment to my Frattamagiore-Recale segment.  So I hop on the subway to Aversa,  pick up where I dropped off a week ago, head under the train tracks and down a quiet country road to the first town Cesa.  Here I find a discreet little park to strum in… and soon I have company.

A fellow joins me and listens attentively.  Then he tells me he’s a singer with a local band.   So we try doing a little improvising together, I start a riff and he sings along, or vice versa.  Soon we’ve got a nice little group of young folks gathered (mostly guys with one girl).  They seem to be enjoying the impromptu show until someone else shows up:  their local pot dealer—and all of a sudden their interest turns elsewhere…

Nice group of young folks—one of the few times I’ve interacted with the younger generation here in this region.  I ask about jobs and their plans for the future.  “I’m joining the military” one of them tells me… it doesn’t seem like this area offers a lot of opportunities for young folks like these.
