It's fun to visit an "end of the road village", and El Hammam definitely qualifies as one. Very little traffic on the one lane, potholed road heading that direction. And after El Hammam there's nothing but untamed forest...
A friendly high school student seems quite happy that a foreigner is coming to visit his little town. He fills me in a bit on the history of El Hammam and the best places to get a good view of the countryside
Up the steep hillside a bit further, the solid stone homes turn into little shanties... then there's a spring... and then just trees and goat herders... I have a nice view of the region, but I decide to keep going all the way to the top of the hill.
Definitely worth the climb. From this hilltop I get a view not only of El Hammam and the Mrirt plateau, but also of the wild hills beyond El Hammam--with a couple little wheatfield tucked in the valleys... A very nice place to rest and ponder as I gaze to the untamed mountains to the east.
Finally I head back down, fill up my water bottle at the spring, and catch a ride back to Mrirt...
