32 days, 10 hours, 10 minutes, 30 seconds...4 weekends left including the weekend of finals until I leave for London on June 9. I had to move a final around to accommodate this, but the instructor was willing to work with me. My birthday is in 22 days. I still have to buy stuff, confirm I have a place to live, get a hotel for my first night, make an itinerary, learn German, buy a Eurorail pass, pick classes for fall quarter, and about a billion other things.
Other than that, I'd like to say hello and thank you for reading my first blog post. I have checked out many sites for doing my travel weblog, and I chose this site because it seemed to give me least hassle and the most features. I looked at WordPress, Tumblr, other travel weblogs... but here is where I am going to stay. It's not as customized as I'd like, but I don't need this site to look nice, I want it to be a place to record my travels when abroad. I want to spend my time posting pictures and writing...not worrying about the look and feel of the site. So...enjoy!
For my first blog post, I'll keep it (kinda) short. I am excited beyond belief, because I have never been out of the country. I've hardly been out of California, but that's another tale for another day. I will be working as a research intern at Universität Karlsruhe, in southern Germany, about 30 minutes from the border of France! My research is regarding robotic surgery on a beating heart...cool I know. I have a direct high speed train connection to Paris in 3 hours...I plan to be using that often. I will befriend the train, for its connections are everywhere.
Being a fool, I will take my iPhone. I will use it, but not in the same way as here in U.S.. I am going to disable 3G and EDGE. That leaves me with WIFI hotspots and internet cafés. I'm hoping there will be enough around so I can find my way, and leave hints of where I am. Otherwise, the cost of data in Europe is too much to bear. I will have a Skype account though! It's on my Facebook if you're interested.
I am not a blogger, so forgive my initial blog posts...I will improve in time. I'm sure I have more to say, but I have to leave now. Feel free to post comments, especially if you have any words of wisdom for traveling! Thanks for reading!
