Update 6: New York, USA
(AUG 24 -AUG 26)

NY was absolutely amazing! There is just so much to do and see. I got to my hostel in West Manhatten (just near central park) in the late afternoon and i immediately struck it off with a kiwi guy (Amos) who was in my room. We hung out that evening with a bunch of people he knew and went to Time Square (which was more of an eggtimer shape than a square...) It was really bright with loads of neon lights around - so much so that you didnt even need to use your camera flash when taking photos at night! We also went into the giant Toys R Us while we were there (it has its own 3-story indoor ferris wheel) and of course we got dragged along to the barbie section by the girls we were with! We later went over to the Hersey's chocolate shop loading up on chocies while we were there.

Thursday was an easy day and the first port of call was the Empire State building - which i went up at 1.30pm... It was an amazing day with fantastic visibility and it was well worth the US$14 it cost me to get up there. You could see all around a good section of Manhatten, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Statten Island, as well as New Jersey to the west. Afterwards i headed to Central Park where i just relaxed and watched some mens softball in the afternoon before walking though a small section of the park to the hostel.

Friday proved to be a lot more fruitful as i hung out with an Aussie girl Jacqie and Amos again. We caught the subway over to brooklyn, walked over the brooklyn bridge and went to ground zero - the place is abolsutely surreal. 20acres of empty land amoungst towering buildings... Reading the storyboards/timelines it was impossible not to be moved being there. An old guy playing amazing grace in the background added to the atmosphere for sure... well from here we headed down to the statten island ferry which goes by the statue of liberty and onto statten island. We checked out the New York Yankees Statten Island Stadium while we were there - no not the big NY stadium - just a smaller one for the minor league... From here we headed back to Manhatten - caught the subway to Grand Central station - which was impressive - (i recognised it off madagascar the movie) before heading on to the UN where we had a tour of some of the meeting rooms. That was really great! Then we headed on to the Rockerfeller Centre - a large complex just south of central park which was really impressive (the Rockerfeller guy was the one who donated the land to the UN for their offices...) By this time it was late afternoon and we headed to the Time Square area for dinner where we got pizza - i love american cheese pizzas! I then went and saw a broadway show - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I loved this show as a kid and i was suprised how well they adapted it to the stage. It was little kiddish but very enjoyable... An interesting moment unfolded during the show where the ushers went nuts over a photo that someone apparantly tried to take... apparantly they can comfiscate your camera - i was actually about to try to take a photo myself but this commotion definitely caused me to rethink...
That fairly much marked the end of my NY trip. It is an awesome city and i will definitely return again and see alot more stuff that i didnt have a chance to see this time around!
Well having a great time...
Cya all next year,
Nath
