Our last stop of the day was at the underground city of Kaymaklı. This is one of many cities in the area that were carved into the volcanic 'tuff' which forms the basis of the many striking formations in Kapadokya (more in the next section). People lived in this city, dating back 4,000 years, for months at a time to hide from the enemy . There are living areas, kitchens, and even wineries! We were able to walk down 4 of the 7 total levels. Creepy doesn't begin to describe some of the super small walkways that led to various rooms and areas. The first floor entrance area wasfor the animals, the next level was like a living area interspersed with bedrooms. Third level was a wine cellar and the fourth was the kitchen.
