The morning after our arrival, we started the first leg of the tour. We headed west through Thrace, the European part of Turkey, amounting to 3% of its land mass. The highway ran close to the Sea of Marmara, which is linked to the Black Sea on the north by the Bosphorus and to the Aegean Sea on the west by the Dardanelles. Thrace connects Turkey with Greece and also extends southwest as the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula.
We drove to the town of Gelibolu (it has a beautiful small marina) for lunch and took a ferry to cross the Dardanelles to Anatolia, the Asian part of Turkey.
