Greetings this time from Kochi(also known as Cochin).

Kochi is one of those places in India that's a 'must see' according to most people you meet along the way.

With it's Arabic, British, Chinese, Dutch, Italians and Portuguese influences you can tell that historically it's also been a must see. However in times gone by it was mainly for exploiting the local inhabitants as opposed to the locals exploiting the tourists these days. Poor us!

Probably the main attraction has to be the Chinese fishing nets which are distinctly unique to Kochi and pretty much world famous. It's believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets here which is strange given that the nets are found only in Kochi. Many fishermen still earn their livelihood by fishing using these massive nets and you can watch them at work at high and low tide each day.

Once they land their catch you can go to the local fish shops situated handily on the shoreline and pick your fish and then have it cooked any which way you desire. Certainly one of the best things for us during our stay in Kerala has been the abundance of fresh fish for consumption. We have eaten it every single day which has been sensational.

A stroll along the beach, particularly at sunset (Mr Luvva Luvva) with the Chinese fishing nets and sailing ships in the background, is a memorable experience. Many European style bungalows can be seen along the shoreline in various states of disrepair. It is said that India's rich and famous come to Kochi to play, a French Riviera of sorts perhaps.

We also made our way down to 'Jew Town' which is where you'll find most of the odds and sods if you have the cash and patience for bargaining. You'll also find very very very cheap cashew nuts here which is what we got excited about. My god strange things do amuse us these days.

A lovely spot to spend a couple of days. We certainly enjoyed ourselves.

Next Pod - Mumbai, India.

Love,

Nath and Kat.
