Well it had to happen. The beard was copping too much flack from those at home, it was getting in the way of me feeding my face and Kat wouldn't come near me anymore. Add to that I hadn't had a haircut since we left Sydney (over 3 months), everything was getting just a little too hairy.
In Turkey my nickname with locals everywhere has Haji Haji (Pilgrim) so the thing just had to go. The aim was to take it all the way to India and have a massive ZZ Top thing going on but I just couldn't do it anymore. Food was getting stuck in it, soup was dribbling down into it and it sometimes stank. I have no idea how people have beards for extended periods of time, they truly are one messy mother of mass.
Arriving into Trabzon after our longest overnighter bus trip so far we made our way to our hotel. Unfortunately we couldn't check into for a couple of hours so we decided to go for a walk around the main square and lo and behold there was a barber. I hadn't had a Turkish shave thus far (obviously) so a snap decision was made, in haste maybe, but made nonetheless. The beard and hair were going the way of the dinosaurs. Kat feigned disappointment but the excitement in her eyes betrayed her.
As you can see from the snaps the beast was out of control and taking on a life of it's own but I must say, once the hair had been shaved down to a number 2 and the beard left as is I was quite taken with the Hells Angel's look. I pleaded with Kat to keep it that way but Kat and the barber conspired and the beard was hacked away within a millimetre or two of its life. Before long the blade was taken to it to finish it off once and for all. Goodbye my friend, I shall miss those late night bonus meals you provided me as I lay in bed. May you rest in peace.
Anyways, we're in Trabzon to use as a base for visiting the Sumela Monestary. There's not a great deal to see in Trabzon to be honest but it's really quite an enchanting place
Trabzon, beautiful one day, perfect the next. Truly one to check out if you're in the East.
Not much else to report from here really so I'll sign off for now.
Next pod, Sumela - Turkey.
Nath and Kat.
