Greetings friends and family from bustling Ankara, Turkey's capital city and the beginning of the end for the Turkey leg of our trip. Ankara is essentially the halfway point of for Turkey and from here we head up to the Black Sea and then head east for a couple of weeks.

We had a couple of reasons for wanting to come to Ankara, number one being our Iranian visa and the mandatory 'letter of introduction' from the Australian embassy. Second priority was the Museum of Anatolian History and lastly Ataturk's Mausoleum. Sadly, none apart from the much needed letter was to be.

You see Kat and I were ill. Desperately ill, in fact we were bedridden for the best part of 2 days without our mothers within cooee distance. I've been this sick before, in fact Vasko 'Babu' Nastevski no doubt remembers when it was in Kathmandu all those years ago. Vas, we wish you were here to care for us in place of our mothers this time as well.

So in response to Keegan's post on the blog a couple of days ago, yes we had an exploding toilet due to meals prepared by those with questionable hygiene, Kat fainted a couple of times and I fell asleep in a pool of my own vomit. At times death would've been a preferable alternative. I could go on as it's well known I like a good pooh and vomit story but I shall leave it there.

So, in the end we saw nothing of Ankara, I did manage to drag my sorry and stinky self to the Australian embassy where I was looked after in a friendly and efficient manner as compared to the Istanbul consulate where the consul was a complete bastard. Given I walked in looking like one of my beloved zombies I think they simply wanted to despatch the disheveled Australian as quickly as possible so as not to deter any skilled immigrants.

There was one strange side effect to me venturing out for various items of food (lemonade, turkish 'tost', ice-blocks etc) and that was the dodgy characters that continually singled me out for sex shop pamphlets. I mean come on, my long grey coat and rubber glove days are long gone friends. I'm a married man now, I can't be seen in those establishments! Hmmmmm, Kat's bedridden, what's a man to do?.

So unfortunately that was Ankara, we really would've liked to have done more but just couldn't manage to do anything but the most pressing errand. Oh well, there's unlikely to be a next time so maybe if someone else actually goes to Anakara and the museum etc they can let us know what it was like.

Next pod, Amasra - Turkey.

Love,

Nath and Kat.
