Rather than take the bus from Kuching I decided to take the express boat  which was quicker. there were not many on board for the 4 hour trip out to sea and then up the Sangai Rijang which is Malaysia's longest river. In addition to the people the boat also took on cargo which included some chicks in crates which would have made the animal rights people mad.

We arrived in Sibu by about mid day and nad I got the next express boat to Kapit. I would describe this boat as a motorised torpedo. It had two powerful engines and sped along at about 60 kph. The passengers were locked in behind steel doors so that there was no way out in a hurry. Some decided to take their chance on the circular boat roof which I thought was just a hairy.

This part of the river was narrower and initially along the banks were stacks of logs waiting to be taken away on small freighters. Then the banks were more forested and there was quite a lot of motorised canoe traffic as there are no roads in this region, but there is an extensive system of rivers and streams. A couple of times we passed logs floating down the river which the boat skillfully avoided.

About 3 hours later we arrived in Kapit which was my destination for the day. I am sure that the dog curled up in a tiny cardboard box by my feet was also pleased to stretch his legs. This was a very small town and walking round it in the evening I passed the vegetable market where all sorts of things were on sale. I enquired about a couple of them but in the main I had little idea about the things on sale.
