Where I stayed
Tuesday night, after the river trip we packed for our overnight stay on Beqa Island which was 20 km south of the mainland island. That night we have to pack for our overnight at Beqa Island, an hour boat drive from the Pearl. As soon as we arrived on the sandy beach with so many beautiful shells and corals washed up ashore, we were greeted by Swiss woman in the hot blue clear sea, who own this place with her Fijian husband. On this island there is 9 villages, 1 primary school and 1 secondary school and no roads. People travel around it by boat or walk through the jungle. This place was away from the villages and only had 2 double bed hut and one 6 bed dorm. A guest was already in one of the hut and he had been here for a few day, so my parents were put in a hut next to his hut, which is
further away from the main house where food is served. I was put in the dorm which was a walk from the main house and parent's hut and I was the only one who is staying there tonight. The woman showed us around and we discovered that we are close to the swamp!! Not a good sign for me because of my friends, the mosquitoes!! (I was just enjoying the break from them at the pearl!) As soon as we settled down lunch was ready, which was very nice Fijian foods. After lunch we went snorkeling as we were told that there was a big reef in-front of us. Unfortunately, the reef was damaged but there were some different type of fishes and shells which was enjoyable to see. As soon we got to the edge of the reef, I stayed to the shallow part as I didn't really want to meet shark as there's been so many shark attack in the newspaper in the past month in Fiji. We borrowed the snorkels and flippers, after awhile I ended up having a blister so I had to take off the flippers and swim, which was very tiring! As soon we got back it was time to get ready for dinner. Parents could hear
the frogs croaking which was so loud.
Before dinner, we watched the beautiful sunset on the beach! When we walked to the main house for dinner, the ground was covered with so many frogs and we tried so hard to not to stand on them! After dinner, we sat outside of our hut on our sunbed to look up at the awesome starry sky (it was similar to what I saw in Amazon) with the noisy frogs! They were loud enough for me to hear with my hearing aids on and I find it very annoying! Poor parents as they'll have to sleep through that! We could see the milky way and shooting stars. Eventually, Dad walked me to my dorm and I jumped into the mosquitoes net onto the bed because the dorm had a few creepy crawls so as long as I am in my net and bed I am happy and
comfortable. After awhile of trying to sleep in the pitch black, suddenly I felt a rumble which felt like it shook the whole hut. I was so frighten as I couldn't work out what it was and I didn't want
to get out of the net to look. The second rumble scared me so much that I got to the point where I thought about running to parent's hut. Finally, a flash followed by after the 3rd rumble,
which made me realised that it is lighting and thundering! I hated the flash as it made me jumped especially in the dark! I had to work hard to ignore it. Again at 1am, I was woken up by the rumble and the flash. I tried so hard to ignore it and go back to sleep which took awhile. Then by 5.30am I woke up by the morning light and looked outside. It looks as if nothing happened through the night! I stayed in bed till about 6.30-7am and walked over to my parent's hut. They were awake and questioning me if I was OK, I explained to them what happened. They didn't sleep well either because of the frogs and the thundering. All morning, I was a bit miserable and I was desperate to leave as I didn't want to sunbath or let alone sit outside with short or t-shirt because of the mosquitoes. My parents though that I was
being silly but I could see mosquitoes flying around and on them sucking their blood. I said 'just you wait' as being in a opened room for 3 months I was sick of all the itchy effect afterward. To make time pass by and being in the salty air, dad and I went kayaking.
After lunch, we did more snorkeling then we packed and left at 3pm. On the way back the boat ride was very bumpy and a few times I was
thrown off my seat! The man who drove the boat said 'we had worsen than this'. We arrived back at the pearl, which was so nice as it a 'mosquitoes-free area'!
