Where I stayed
Valley of Fire State Park
We finally feel ready to leave Zion National Park, Utah and continue our journey west to the Valley of Fire State Park, not far from Las Vegas.
Driving through the desert the landscape is quite unremarkable. We leave the main highway and drive across Paiute reservation land before dropping down off a plateau and find ourselves in a valley of red sandstone formations, and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. Ancient trees and early man represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyphs. As the sun begins to set we see where why it was named Valley of Fire.
Our campsite was nestled under one of the large sandstone formations where we could watch the sunset and the full moon rise over the desert. This has to be one of the prettiest campsites we have had.
