We made one last attempt to see the wild ponies before leaving Assateague and once again they eluded us. We found one of the corrals the park service uses with three ponies inside but none in the wild. We even stopped where some cars were pulled off the road thinking they had spotted the elusive ponies – nothing. At the visitor center a gentleman asked Nancy if we were the folks from Washington and had we seen the ponies. He had been in one of the cars pulled off the road and recognized us from the van. Indeed, the ponies had been there, in the trees as we suspected but out of our field of vision, perhaps a visit to the eye doctor is in order when we return home.
In less than two hours we had entered North Carolina and left the worst of the traffic behind, crossing Albemarle Sound to the Outer Banks. We stopped for the night along the oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills NC.
