Our 84th day we were on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar, going to the city of Andoany previously called Hellville after Admiral de Hell the governor of the area in colonial times. We arrived by tender to a very unstable narrow dock and quickly boarded a bus without air conditioning. This is the most popular place in Madagascar, but there is not much here to see, just a few beach hotels that cater to people from France and Italy. The island is very poor and many people don't have indoor plumbing.

First they took us to a market that was very crowded and full of fruits, vegetables, fish and animals. People in this part of the world eat only the freshest foods and they shop daily. Back on the bus we rode a few miles to a outdoor kiosk where there were lemurs and brightly colored chameleon and one of them jumped on me and crawled up my camera strap to my head and took a small bite of my finger as I tried to get him off me. The Island was isolated from Africa so lemurs are only found here; they are white, black and all colors in between. The lemurs are very slow and cuddly, most are nocturnal and difficult to see hanging from tree branches or sleeping in tree trunk depressions.

After a hot 45 minute drive we arrived at a resort hotel and we had a drink and some fruit while listening to group of children chanting a monotonous melody. Back on the bus we went to a lake that was close to people trying to sell us different touristy things in the middle of the road with cars and buses trying to get past.

When we got back to the dock there was a very long line waiting for the tenders fortunately we had an umbrella to give some protection from the sun. While heading back to the ship we noticed that the crew had removed the razor wire from the promenade deck and also, the water cannons and sound devises so I guess we are no longer in danger from the pirates.

Did your finger recover from the bite? It sounds like a great trip! I get seasick so a trip like yours scares me a bit. However, i've enjoyed your wonderful diaries .
Best wishes Seelma

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. ( Even with the pirates, finger bite, and questionable swim) We thought we told you both to stay safe !
