A quick update to say thankyou to everyone for my birthday wishes and to let you know that I have arrived safe and sound in Ecuador, and with plenty of time to go and celebrate my birthday with an afternoon relaxing in the sunshine in a park followed by a cocktail or 2!!

Even though I only booked my flight a week before flying and chose the cheapest option, I managed to end up on exactly the same flights as Suzan so we arrived in Quito together.  Suzan is booked in for more Spanish lessons for the next 4 weeks so we are going our separate ways, but meant that I was able to enjoy my birthday with a friend :o)  I was lucky enough to celebrate the night before as well, with my friends in Cusco, and even had a card and lovely presents to open so it was a great birthday!!

Today me and Suzan took the funicular to take in the views of Quito from 4100m, and the surrounding snow capped volcanoes, its a spectacular sight!  Quito is much much bigger than I had imagined and split into the old town and new town.  I am staying in the new part which is a very modern & trendy city full of bars, restaurants and night clubs, and is the complete opposite to Cusco so was a bit of a culture shock after spending 4 weeks there.  We were also warned that its not safe to go walking alone at night or on Sundays so again a complete change from Cusco!  On the way down from the funicular we shared the cable car with Julio and his friend Cosmi.  It turns out that Julio studied art history in Exeter, UK, and now owns a tour company in Quito, so he kindly volunteered to drive us to the old town and gave us a history lesson on the way, and then told us all the places we should spend the afternoon visiting so we ended up having a great day out and overturned all our fears of Quito being an unfriendly place to be a single female traveller!

In an hours time Im leaving Quito and taking a night bus to Cuyabena, a jungle lodge 8 hours drive away in the Amazon basin where Im going to stay for the rest of the week before I fly to Galapagos next Sunday.  Will have loads of great photos to share when Im back!!
