So we did something we would normally do. Which was get nervous about availability of room over the New Years period and book in advance. This means that you undoubtedly pay top wack for a place you havenīt seen in an area you donīt know over other accommodations that maybe better on every level. However you have to balance that against peace of mind knowing that we have a place peak season in Panamaīs tourist hot spot...Bocas Del Toro.

The boat out to Isla Colon, the main hub of the Bocas Islands, was great fun. A high speed power boat over beautiful glassy waters taking about 20 mins. Its was damm hot so leaving our Aussie time saviours from the boarder we got supplies and headed over to Isla Bastimento our home for the festivities.

Hotel Bastimento confirmed our original fears. Thou admittedly in an absolutely lovely room we were paying far over the odds and there was plenty of space left in the rest of the hotel, let alone, the rest of the island. But we were in so enjoyment must prevail.

The islands had been struck by horrendous flooding in the weeks leading up to New Year. Houses and restaurant had been blown away and rubbish was everywhere. It made for interesting time on the island. In particularly the walk across the island to the beach was a quagmire of Glastonbury proportions. Wizard Beach is notoriously dangerous and we were on the beach with the girlfriend of a Belgium guy who nearly drowned in the strong currents only to be saved by to hero surfers.

The island itself, was a bit tasty, as Nadia would attest to. Plenty of big, teeth sucking gents making x rated suggestions of things they would like to do whether Vinny was present or not. Theres a handful of eateries. The best being an exceeding random Thai restaurant. An American Thai couple how have also built some bungalows, well worth staying at.

The highlight though was New Years. Always an event best left unplanned and therefore without expectation. We nipped out for an early tipple bumped into the Frenches, of course! Then spent the night back at the hotel, who out of nowhere produced a huge amount of alcohol and some music, with the Frenches, the lucky Belgians and a selection of others chatting the night away. Nadia achieving in the aim getting me drunk, having to escorted me to bed at 1.

Next day we were up and away. Direction uncertain and our feelings towards Bocas mixed.
