After a gruelling flight from London we arrived in Bangkok in the early morning and managed to figure out the buses and get to Khao San Road, the tourist hub of the city. Finding a place to stay was easy and the plan was to go to sleep and catch up because we were so tired but we were buzzing from the atmosphere and had to get out an explore. We had a walk around before deciding that Bangkok was crazy and that we would rather get out and down to the beach than spend too long there.
To make the most of our time we hired a tuk-tuk (which took ages because they all try and rip you off) and went to see some sites around the city including the Grand Palace and the giant golden buddha.
The next day we were up early to get the bus to Koh Chang, an island south east of Bangkok. It was a long journey but the bus was air conditioned and we met a lovely Irish couple and spent the time swapping hilarious travel stories. They said that they had been to Koh Chang before and it was their favourite island so that was exciting for us.
When we got to the island it was raining heavily and the street was flooding in various places but being the rainy season, we have to get used to this. We found the cheapest hotel along the beach we wanted to stay at which actually is quite nice and very clean. (GBP1.5 per night!) We met a German girl called Susan on the way over who is travelling on her own and was staying at the same place as us so we have been spending a lot of time with her. This was really lucky because the next day we hired motorbikes and went off round the island and her and Anna are the only two that have experience riding them. If we hadn't have been with Susan we wouldn't have been able to do this. Exploring the island by bike was such a good idea because we saw many parts we wouldn't otherwise have seen. The only bad part was that the people who had filled the tank had mixed the petrol with water so after about half an hour the bike cut out completely. Luckily the people on the island are so friendly and we managed to get it fixed for about 50p!
We rode off to the Southern part of the island to go elephant trekking which was excellent. They were beautiful and very docile and we rode for about an hour before stopping at the most gorgeous river to have a swim. The water was crystal clear and very refreshing after the heat. After riding back for another hour we rode off and went in search of some beaches and when we found one just sat and chilled out for a while.
Today is just a day to relax and to try not spend any money! Tomorrow we are planning to go to Cambodia and on to Angkor Wat.
