Despite having an amazing day in Holbox with the whalesharks and mantarays, we couldnīt take the sandflies any longer and decided to head back to the mainland and go to Tulum. We had another morning in Holbox before we caught the boat back to Chiquila and then a bus to Tizimin, a small town about 2.5 hours drive south of Chiquila. We took another bus from here to Valladolid and found out we had a 2 hour wait for the next bus to Tulum so we went out into the town and had something to eat in a nice restaurant overlooking the main square. Back on the bus it was a 90 min ride to Tulum where we checked into The Weary Traveller. This hostel is in the main town and provides a free bus to the beach each day which is a few kms away. There is nothing but cabanas on the beach so it is much more advisable to stay in the town. There is also a free breakfast which is amazing and use of a kitchen so we cooked our own meals in the evening as well.
The next morning we got the bus down to the beach which Iīd like to point out is STUNNING. I was so surprised I was almost (almost!) speechless when we got there. This is possibly one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Unfortunately there isnīt a huge amount of shade and I got burnt to a crisp. During the afternoon we met some Spanish guys who hardly spoke any English which meant I really had to pull out the Spanish which I did, surprisingly successfully. I also met a woman from Argentina who is a Spanish teacher in California and so I had some free lessons on the beach! We spent the whole day on the beach and it was so nice to be able to relax and not worry about anything.
This relaxing way of life became very easy to get used to and so we ended up spending an extra day in Tulum getting to know some lovely people there. The third night we were there it was ladies night across the road at a bar with free drinks and some quality music. We had a really good night out with everyone we had met.
The next evening we got the nightbus out of Tulum to Palenque to visit the jungle ruins.
