Greetings

Time for an update. On my last update I had just arrived back in Travese City to spend some time with my family and help my parents celebrate their 50th anniversary. The anniversary went well, everyone had a good time. I ended up staying at my parents for about 3 weeks, resting and relaxing before I would continue on my travels.

Before I left Michigan I did see some more sights. One day my parents and I took a drive out to Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan. We also went up to the Upper Penisula for a few days to see the sights that I didn't have time to see early. Among the sight were Picture Rocks National Lakeshore, Whitefish Point and Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks.

At Picture Rocks my Dad and I took a 3 hour boat tour of the Rocks. Picture Rocks got their name because the rocks looks as someone painted them. They are supposedly similar to the painted rocks in the desert in the southwest. I let you know when I get there.

Whitefish Point has a lighthouse and a maritime museum. It is off of Whitefish Point that many ships have sank in Lake Superior including the Edmond Fitzgerald. In the museum they have the bell that was on the Edmond Fitzgerald.

Sault Ste. Marie is known for the Soo Locks. Which help the ships go from Lake Superior to Lake Huron. Becuase the lakes are at two different levels the need to go through the locks to be put at the level of the lake that the ships will being going on. While I was at the Soo Locks the were two ships going through the Locks at the same time. Which I don't think it happens a lot, so it was pretty cool to see it happen.

I finally left my parents on Tuesday 8/22 and spent the night in Ludington at a state park which my family camped at several times when I was younger. The next morning i got up and took a ferry boat across Lake Michigan to Manitowoc Wisconsin. It is only a 60 mile trip across the lake and took 4 hours to cross. We had calm waters and it was a nice day to cross. We did get a little rain as we got into Wisconsin. From the I headed west and spent the night in western Wisconsin.

The next day I continued on my way and made it as far as Chamberlin South Dakota. At the rest area just before Chamberlian they had an exhibit on Lewis and Clark as they had spent a few days on the riverside on their journey to the Pacific Ocean in 1804 and they stayed there on their way back in August of 1806. When I got into Chamberlian and was on my way to the campground I notice a bank temperature said it was 99 degrees out and it felt like it.

The next day (Friday) I head off to Custer South Dakota and to see Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. On the way i stopped in Wall South Dakota to have lunch at Wall Drug. When I got to the campground the weather had change to be in the 60's and overcast.

On Saturday and Sunday it rained each day but I went to Mt. Rushmore on Saturday and Crazy Horse Memorial on Sunday. I got some good pictures of both.

Today was a nice day, no rain at all. So I went back to Mt. Rushmore in the morning and Crazy Horse Memorial in the late afternoon.

At Mt. Rushmore they have a trail the goes about 1 mile around and you get different views of the presidents, sometimes you can't see all of them at once.

At Crazy Horse Memorial I got some better pictures and in the evening they have a laser light show on the mountain. I stuck around for that and it was a pretty good show.

All in all it has been a good visit here. I would highly recommend to everyone to come visit this are if you ever get the chance. My next stop is Devils Tower National Monument (it was the mountain in Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and then from there i will probably head south into Colorado.
