What I did
We departed first thing and hiked into the park. It was only 5km to the entrance, and another 2 to the crater. However, it was all uphill and at 9500 ft. The perfect morning workout. It was our goal to beat the fog and rain. Which kinda worked :)
The Crater sits at 9300 ft ish and is the 2nd largest crater in the world (9/10th of a mile). From the top, you can peer down into the crater and massive lagoon. The aquamarine lagoon is also the largest in the world and 1000ft deep.
The Acid rains generated by the volcano create a unique flora. The centre is covered by giant ferns and poor mans umbrella plants.
Poas has 3 craters, only one of which is active (see photos). The 2nd crater has transformed into a cold water lagoon, Boas Lake. You can reach the lake via a short hike, through the unique forest. In total, the park contains four major habitats: Arrayans, cloud forest, stunted forest and areas of little to no vegetation.
I'd recommend rain gear :)
