What I did
Arenal was another dormant volcano, until 1968. A huge explosion triggered 4 rupture points and resulted in disaster. As a result, Arenal has little vegetation (unlike her sister Cerro Chato).
We began our hike at the rangers station, the trail was only 3.4 km (6.8 return). The hike was easy, but wet. For some reason we neglected to bring Ponchos or an umbrella. Who needs rain gear in the wet season, right? It started with a gentle spit and ended in a down pour that lasted over 10 hrs. Fortunately, we were off to the Tabacon Hot spring.
Tabacon Hot springs is named after the former village (that was destroyed in the eruption) and the first natural hot spring. The spring is surrounded by lush forest, rare orchids and a thundering river. The pools reach up to 40 deg C and very in temperature. They also have waterfalls, natural cold pools, a slide and a swim up bar. Fortunately, the volcano pumps gallons and gallons of fresh water into the spring each minute. Eliminating the need for chemicals. After succumbing to \ a sweat induced exhaustion we enjoyed a beautiful dinner at the lodge.
Tabacon Hot springs was another highlight for us.
