Due to modernization, roads, scooter etc the canal systems are no longer the Major source of transport.
Truthfully, it was very touristy and still worth seeing. The canal system was packed with wooden canoes, all of which were full of fruits, vegetables, food vendors etc. It was a brief window into Bangkok's past.
