Three months ago I was told about the New Mexican Job and my possible involvement. Now, of course I was filled with joy. It meant I had single handily avoided the Mauritania and Libya bullet fº Thank Goodness. In one month I would be off to tan, fly and enjoy life to its fullest. When I left Points North for my new adventure my head was filled with several romantic illusions about Mexico, and boy was I WRONG. I can honestly say I experienced what most people refer to as ¡§A culture shock¡¨. [Note: not sure how I survived 6 months in Africa without one].

Picture this. From your window you see a stunning desert filled with cacti surrounded by mountains. Every direction you turn, your breath is taken away. Further down the road you notice a sign that says ¡§international border, 3 km ahead¡¨ and your stomach starts to tickle with excitement.
As you approach customs you roll down the window, only to be hit with a disgusting fowl scent (a cross between a garbage pile and an outhouse in 30deg C). After clearing customs you notice the streets are thithy and littered with every conceivable piece of garbage known to man. Amongst the garbage pile a mother and 6 small children sat begging for any small change you could afford to spare. With in seconds I counted 4 stray mangy dogs drinking gutter water that they were obviously thankful for. The car was quickly approached my several men trying to make a living selling everything known to man. It was at this point I realized Mexico¡¦s reality. It¡¦s not wonder so many died trying to hope the fence.

Most people see Mexico¡¦s beaches from a resort and are catered to for a week. Although I found it sad and a bit shocking, I would do it all again. With some luck I will get a chance to check out what the rest of this interesting country has to offer (Away from the US border).
