Port St Johns _ Amapando Backpackers
This one night stop over ended up being a 2 night three say event which changed my travel plans. The backpacker itself is difficult to get to with out a car (i.e. not on the Bazz Bus route) but is well worth the effort. It is situated on a hillside with a view of the river, forest and ocean. I ended up taking 2 days to relax and enjoy what the rest of the Transkei had to offer.
You can take a hike to a nearby waterfall, hike to the Blowhole, and run the beach or if you are really adventurous hike for 5 days to Coffee Bay along the Wild Coast.
What started in Coffee Bay as a 3 day tour of the Transkei ended in 10 days. It is by far South Africa's sweet spot. Most people concentrate on the commercial Garden route, but I strongly recommend you kick back and enjoy the Transkei. I could spend a life time here.
