My phone was now ringing more than the British Gas complaints line. I know I should have answered it just to say that I wasn't coming back but I just couldn’t be bothered with her right then. I left it on silent in my new room which was a very comfortable space with a king size bed, hot shower and balcony that I got for a very good price compared to other people I spoke to and then I headed to the beach. I had been told that Jomtien was much nicer than Pattaya and to be fair it was. However, it still wasn’t really the kind of place I want to be in Thailand. There wasn’t actually a beach as such, it was just giant rectangular blocks of parasols owned by bars and restaurants that stretch from the promenade to the waters edge under which are set out uncomfortable deck chairs and little tables. The little sand there is before you hit the water is covered with fat old tourists attempting to cook themselves with coconut oil. And just as a cherry on the top, it is impossible to sit in peace for more than two minutes without some annoying fucker trying to sell you copied DVD’s, elephant carvings, sarongs, pedicures, massages, lighters, puppets and fuck knows what else. And it isn’t like they go away when you say no thank you (My ow cap, which is very polite) they just stare at you for about 20 seconds literally trying to un-nerve you into buying the shit. I really wanted one of those boxing gloves attached to a spring gun. !!!Boooooiiiiiinnnnng THWACK!!!

Despite all this I stayed for three nights. I’m not sure why but I think it is because my room was so comfortable and I just wanted a time out. I basically read, rode around on a rented motorbike and ate for the three days which isn’t really much fun to write about. Two things did happen that were interesting though.

First I was in my room on my second night about to go to sleep when there was a commotion from outside. I was on the third floor so I went out on to my balcony to see. Two bar girls were having a nasty fight on the road below pulling hair out and trying to scratch each other’s faces. Screaming and shouting and knocking tables over. While they had their hands locked in each other’s hair a random English dude came along and decided he was gonna separate the fight. He got in the middle of the two and was trying to loosen the hands of the women from each other’s hair. This went on for about a minute which was quite funny really because he was getting nowhere and the other locals around were finding the whole thing quite amusing. He had them separated but they were trying to run through him to get back at it. Then, out of the blue while he was focusing on one of the girls, the other leaned down to the ground, picked up a bottle and smashed it over the back of his head. He went down like a sack of shit. Then, the two women looked at each other, looked at the dude rolling around on the floor and started booting him in the ribs for about ten seconds before both attempting to straighten their hair and walking off. The last I saw of him he was being escorted into the bar by a group of other bar girls stroking him and making a big fuss. He probably ended up losing his money too.

Secondly it was my last night and there was a massive storm going on over an island off the coast. The lightening was going every 15-20 seconds but was almost silent because it was so far away. I had a bit of a bifta that I had acquired and thought I would ride down to the far end of the beach where there were no parasols and usually no people. It was about 1am. Obviously I wanted to be well out of the way so I kept going until I couldn’t see any people. As I was getting off my motorbike a ladyboy came round the corner, saw me getting off my motorbike and waved. I ignored him and quickly jumped onto the beach and headed for the shoreline about 40m away. The fucker stopped his bike next to mine and sat on my seat. Just sat there waiting. In was thinking that I didn’t care, I was gonna be on this beach smoking and recording the lightening for at least half an hour by which point he will have got bored and left. Forty-five minutes later the bastard was pacing up and down still waiting for me. I was gonna have to talk to him. It isn’t that I have a problem with ladyboy’s. I had spoken to them before and they are usually funny. I just didn’t want to be seen at 2am in a secluded place alone with one. Plus the bifta had made me a little paranoid. As I walked back towards my bike he sat on it again.

"Excuse me, could I get on my bike please"

“You give me cigarette?”

“I don’t smoke”

“I see you smoke on beach”

Shit!

I just quit”

“You liar”

At this point she, I mean he, got off my bike but leaned on the handle bars from the front towards me.

“You hab girlfriend”

“I have a wife and two children”

“Where your ring den”

Shit!

“None of your bloody business now will you bugger off”

I rolled the bike forward a little so he had to move then started the engine and rode off. The last thing I felt was him stroking my arm as I pulled away. Persistence just isn’t the word.

It was time to go and I had just the place. I was going for a bit of the island life on Koh Samet.
