Ilha Grande, Brasil to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
During breakfast, Brenda got in trouble for trying to pack some take away lunch. Yikes! Of course we could read the sign in Portuguese but we tried to play it off like we couldn't! Our journey to Rio began by our ferry ride. Three hours and many twisty roads later, we finally arrived in Rio de Janeiro. We wasted no time. After dropping off our belongings, we made our way to the famous Sugar Loaf where we made it just as the sun was setting. It was such an intense experience to be standing amongst the clouds and bright lights of Rio. At this point we were all hungry and decided to walk to the mall. Our night ended with a walk to the famous Copacabana beach.

On this gloomy day, a few of us took the metro to downtown where we did some of our final shopping. The city was bustling. Brenda and I had lunch at a local café. Later on, we had dinner at a local Thai restaurant (I had the Mango shrimp). The night wrapped up with a visit to another local bar. Wednesday April 6, 2005

After seventeen days, we had reached our final day with the group. Soon, everyone would begin to embark on their journeys home or to other destinations. Brenda and I were exhausted at this point in the trip and decided to change our flight. Soon thereafter, I discovered that I would be going snowboarding with my brother to Lake Tahoe the weekend I was supposed to be returning. This was an added bonus for leaving early. The remaining group members took local transportation to Corcovado to see the Christ. On the way back to the hotel, Brenda and I observed some delightful sights of the sugar loaf and we decided to hop off the bus and take advantage of the incredible photo opportunity. Back in the area, Brenda indulged me in my interest in spending time in foreign markets. We made it back in the hotel in time to shower and join Monica for dinner. Monica was always up for anything! We tried going to some local clubs but discovered that they might not have met our interests if you know what I mean. So we ended up indulging on some naughty food at a Denny's style restaurant (plus alcohol).

We spent out final hours in South America squeezing in some last minute activities. Erin, Jan, Maria, Brenda, Paul, Elisa, and I had lunch at a local restaurant where I enjoyed by far, the best dessert of my life. Of course I couldn't just have one serving. I had a mousse style dulce de leche tasting concoction followed by a passion fruit tart. I can still savor it! After Jan and Erin left for the bus, the rest of us went walking past Copacabana and into Ipanema Beach. I was in love with the beach! Too bad we only had a few hours left and still had to do some last minute shopping. Even still, I sank my feet into Ipanema's sand felt the waves crashing. This was a sight I would definitely not mind seeing again. A few hours later, our speed demon taxi driver dropped us to the airport. As we waited to board the plane, it was somwhat unimaginable that three entire weeks had passed. Ultra heavy bags in hand, we left South America with a lot more than luggage. Over the weeks, Brenda and I accumulated an abundance of memories and photographs to recount our incredible South American journey.
