Where I stayed
New Year´s Eve...was spent in Torres del Paine National Park. We were worried that we weren´t going to be able to see the Torres del Paine (towers) because yesterday, it was so gloomy! But when we awoke, we were pleasantly surprised at the day´s clarity! During the morning, we drove around the park and caught some amazing views. There were guanacos everywhere! A guanaco is a member of the camel family. They are quite abundant in the park and exciting to watch. We then took a walk and saw some glacial bodies in Grey Lake that had drifted off from the main glacial source. A little later, we went on a boat ride through Grey Lake to catch check out the glaciers from up close...I can´t believe how blue they were! Its as if someone, dyed them! At the end of the day, we headed back to Refugios, the place where we stayed, and got ready to wrap up 2006.
I was away for New Year´s for the first time ever. Last night we were served a cold meal with some funky fruit. We were later told that it is Chilean tradition to have the last meal of the year served cold...interesting. I will admit, I was quite nostalgic as I thought for a second, "I traded mis tamalitos for cold food?" Ahhh... I was thinking about everyone last night. I wish I could have called but we were literally in the middle of nowhere staying at a dorm-style lodge with only a generator for power...meaning, a phone call: FAT CHANCE.
Even still, I made the best of the night and enjoyed everyone´s company very much!
