During the past few days Gail and I have been busy driving from store to store, buying things for our new home. As is always the case with us, we stop for something to eat most every trip. Being in the south has opened up a new world of foods for both Gail and I. I have eaten most types of food but Gail up until recently has been pretty plain and simple.

Everyone who knows me understands my love for food. I love it all. Cooking, smelling, looking at and most of all eating it. The food changes that we are having is a very welcome pleasure. Let me tell you it is sometimes funny to say the least watching Gail see and try new things.

Gail has come to be somewhat of a Hush Puppy connoisseur. At first she could not figure out the "thing" about these wonderful deep fried balls of corn bread. She wasn't quite sure what they were, desert or part of the main course. After having puppies now at most every meal, Gail is a pro. She now critiques every Puppy on flavor, texture, sweetness and crunchiness. She has determined that the best puppies are to be had at a place called Sea Mans Seafood right down the road from us.

Next thing she spotted was the green spinach like vegetable called Collards. Now Gail loves Spinach so Collards are right up her ally. Every good Southern eatery has them on the menu. Boiled up with a ham hock or 2 and maybe some fatback and black-eye peas. For me this is a treat. I grew up eating collards and find them to be much sweeter the Spinach. Gail has never heard of them and finds it amazing that guys sell them right on the side of the road out of their trucks, cut field fresh. Every garden, flower bed, and for that matter open space has Collards growing in them. Gail's new found friend is everywhere!

What could possibly be next? Gail's next adventure in food might just be, that's right, GRITS!
