Where I stayed
Brookgreen Gardens

Today's weather proved to be wonderful, (60 and partly cloudy), so I decided to take Gail to see a festival of lights tonight. This amazing light spectacular was being held at the Brookgreen Gardens. So after an early dinner we jumped in the truck for the 46 mile trip.

Brookgreen Gardens is a group of 6 old rice plantations that a man bought back in the late 1800s. His wife was an artist and sculptor and so they created a wonderful area of gardens with sculptures and fountains throughout. The gardens have many groves of MASSIVE southern oak trees, all heavily laden with Spanish Moss. These in themselves are works of art. There are also many beautiful walkways, all boarded by different types of grasses and shrubbery. Spring and summer are the best months to visit to enjoy all the splendor of this foliage.

As we turned into the Gardens, there was a huge statue fountain, lit with what seemed to be hundreds of lights and hand lit candles. Simply a masterpiece and what came to be only the start of a wonderful night. Now you have to know the my Gailsy is not the artsy, garden walking, sight-seeing type. I was a little concerned that she would not enjoy this event. But as she does most every day of my life, she fooled me. From her Co-pilot seat all I was hearing was the "ohs and ah's" from her capturing every inch of the beauty laid out for everyone to enjoy along the mile or so drive to the parking areas. Thousands of hand lit candles hanging from the trees to light our way, along with a fountain or sculpture here and there also adorned with lights and candles. I now thought to myself "OK I done good".

Parking in a big field with the hundreds of other guests we strolled towards the entrance of the gardens. I was feeling like I was 17 again. Being with my best friend - the true love of my life - my Wife of 31 years in this beautiful place was reminding me just how good my life is right now. As we got to the entrance the amazement started. Here, before us was a piece of Heaven. Old red brick archways adorned with thousands of tiny white lights to lead your way into this wonderland.

We walked from area to area, with each one being more amazing then the next. Gail and I enjoyed the different ways that they used lighting to enhance the sculptures and fountains. Each fountain would have some sort of very low accent lighting on the ground and then hundred of candles floating in the fountain itself, breathtaking. The simply massive thousand year old Oaks all had bright ground lighting shinning up through the limbs, bouncing of the moss, which was absolutely gorgeous. We walked around together in amazement for about 2 hours and then headed towards one of the 6 entertainment tents. We sat and listened to a very good band play both Christmas music and some rock & roll. The other tents around the gardens all had some sort of entertainment, from Soul and Gospel to story telling to instrumental. There was something for everyone.

I took many photos of this wonderful place but alas, our camera is not the best for this sort of lighting. Those that did come out are very nice and I hope you all can just picture in your minds eye what we were looking at when taking the picture. If by chance you are ever in this area during the holiday season, you must experience this event first hand. It is one that will be remembered a lifetime.

Gail and I both hope all of our Family and Friends are in good health and spirits. We miss you all but must continue our quest. Life has given us a chance to explore and expand our horizons. I believe we are truly happy and our lives are good. Until next time, be well. We think of you often.

Brookgreen Gardens are just beautiful. When I traveled to Murrell's Inlet this past June my neighbor Betty and I spent an afternoon there walking among the different gardens and sculptors. It was just lovely in the spring and I know it was beautiful at night with all the lights. so glad that you were able to go there.
