Welcome to my travel blog!!!!

I am Matt Walker and I have recently quit my job as a mechanical engineer, sold most of my belongings, and have started a journey that I hope takes me around the world for the next 6 to 9 months. Right now, my plan is to hit up New York, Spain, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, and Nicaragua. This is definitely not set in concrete and I'm sure there will be some deviations. If you're going to make a comment, please remember there is a wide range of people and personalities looking at the blog...

After having a little BBQ in San Diego to say good-bye to my awesome friends, I rented a car and threw everything I have left in it.  I was lucky enough to stop in San Jose and have a dinner with some college / high-school friends and wake up for a dawn-patrol surf session in Santa Cruz.  We paddled out in the dark and were able to watch a sun-rise accompanied with waist to shoulder, glassy, punchy waves.

I made it to my hometown where my parents still live, South Lake Tahoe, CA.  If you've never been to Tahoe, get here. Its got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.  I guess I'll have a better say on that after my trip.

Its been crazy hectic trying to get everything together for the trip, but I've managed to get some fun time in while I'm home.  My dad and I mountain biked a trail called "Mr. Toads Wild Ride" or just "Toads." http://www.tahoeadventuresports.com/mbikeindex/south/toads.htm
Its a pretty intense ride and a good wake-up call to how out of shape I am.  I was light headed the whole way up and I have definitely room to improve my mountain bike skills. "Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, like nun-chuck skills, bow-hunting skills, computer hacking skills... "

The day after Toads, I was lucky enough to have some of the family up to Tahoe for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. A hard part for me during my travels will be Thanksgiving and Christmas without my family.  We had the old fashion Thanksgiving dinner with all the works outside in a beautiful Tahoe autumn day. It was a perfect dinner.

The next day my Dad and I hiked mount Tallac.  We busted up the mountain in about 2.5 hours.  The summit of Tallac is about 9,700' high and usually has one of the best views ever.  We got to the top though and we were socked in by clouds... no view from the peak this time.  It didn't matter too much though, Waldo still enjoyed the half-way views. We hustled back down to make sure we could send my sister back to Reno airport, who flew up from Long Beach for the family get-together.

Tahoe was amazing as always, but its time for me to hop on the plane and get to New York City!!
