Friday, August 13, 2010

Veliko Tarnovo, or лико Търново, is a cool little town in North Central Bulgaria which was the capt ital once upon a time. This is probably the best hostel I've stayed at due to the great owners. These guys really go out of their way to make you feel like you are actually at your own home. The first day I went with one of the owners, a few other guests, and friends of the owners to a river for the afternoon to swim and jump off the rocks.

The next afternoon I left to go on a 6 Km hike to a monastery, but within 10 minutes of leaving something hit me like a train and I was completely exhausted and dizzy out of nowhere. It took everything I had to walk back to the hostel. I laid down in bed at 4 pm and didn't get up once until 9 am the next morning. I have no idea what that was about but by mid-day I felt perfectly fine.

More interesting than anything in Bulgaria is my change of plans for the rest of my travel. On September 22 I will be going to Cape Town to be part of a group of 4 doing an overland journey through a good amount Sub-Saharan Africa in Toyota Land Cruiser.  We will begin and end in South Africa with a completion date of August 2011. Traveling alone can be tough at times so it will be nice to be with others and make some new friends. One thing I really look forward to is driving, which I miss a lot.

Looks like a cool place. I heard from mom that you were going to Africa, but didn't realize you may be there for a year. I guess this may extend the duration of your travels. Have fun and keep us posted. Would like to find out your favorite places and suggestions for vacation spots.

So finishing in August 2011, and starting when? A year long treck in Africa? Be careful down there. Remember the moved the Dakar Rally to South America because of the bandits on the route in Africa. Needless to say, sounds awesome and I would love to go.

Starting the end of September. From what I've read, South America is one of the more dangerous places to travel. We wont be going to Mauritania.

I realize Africa is a big village, but a whole year?
I'm betting you're gonna tire of it in about 8 weeks and be looking for ways to hit another continent. My.02. Just be safe and have fun. DO. YOU. HAVE. MOSQUITO.NET?

We got the post card today! Gus and Ashford miss you too.
The Bulgarian sleeping flu sounds like Dengue fever. I had it last week. Transmitted by mosquitoes or vampires in eastern Europe.
Have fun in Africa. Are you going to keep traveling after that?

Have fun and be careful in Africa. The girls want a picture of you posted. And more videos...the cows were really funny; they must be deaf to not go crazy with those bells ringing in their ears all the time. Wonder what happens when they take the bells off?
