Port Parham Foreshore Free Camp

Well, we hadn't long left Adelaide behind when we decided to stop for a cuppa. We pulled into Port Parham at Shelly & Ian’s recommendation and we planned to have a cuppa  on the foreshore, but when we got there, it was just all too inviting!  Even though it was still morning tea, we decided to set up at the free campsite on Port Parham foreshore and hang around for a couple of days. Apparently they catch crabs with rakes here!

When we started to set up, we ran out of gas(as you do) so back the 10km into the township of Dublin to get the bottles filled. The guy at the store was awesome and really friendly and lent us his rake to try our hand at crabbing.  The only mistake we made was not getting more instructions on how and where exactly to do the 'raking’.

They are very, very big tidal flats here and it was quite a hike out to the water and soft and splodgy in places where we were sinking in up to our ankles like quicksand!  It was pretty hard going for my dickie leg, but fun and very pretty out there on the foreshore.  With no idea what to do, Billy started raking here and there, but to no avail.  It is pretty hard yakka raking through the sand and weed and stuff too!  Billy trod on two crabs, didn’t catch either one, raked a couple of times but we are not sure of the technique and where you look so it was a bit daunting.  We came back empty handed, but we had a great time trying and we needed the exercise.  The weather is beautiful and warm, a little bit windy now and then but generally pretty darned perfect.  There are quite a few campers here, and all in all a great campsite.

Next morning we woke to a beautiful sunny 20°, and we took it pretty easy.  One of the campers here told us that you walk along the little waterways between the weeds and rake there.  So off we went for another crack at it. Well I tell you, Billy gave it a good hard try! It was quite a grin and we got a good laugh if nothing else.  No sign of a crab at all today.  Back empty handed again!

Because of the huge tides, the locals have created vehicles to tow their boats out to the water.  So clever and ingenious!  Crazy looking things they are!  Would have been great to have access to one to get out to the water and back!

Well we are heading to Port Germein tomorrow.  Not far for us to travel but we actually caught crabs last time we were there with dilly pots and had a ball.  Maybe we will get the elusive crabs there…
