Aloha Here I am in Oahu Hawaii (Honolulu). I stayed at one of my best friends (Cindys) house which is in Kahulu in Oahu. Since she had to work and since her office was near the airport it was easier for her to drop me off at the airport and from there I would take a bus into Wakiki. While waiting for the bus this guy drives up in a beautiful brand new BMW to pick up
his wife or girlfreind. He takes her bags puts them in the trunk and then she kisses him all over his face (lots of kisses). I suddenly think hey with that BMW I would be kissing you too! By the way BMW is my favorite car. Back to my story:
I got on the bus. Its a nice ride and you get to see a lot of Honolulu but it does take about 1 hr and 30 minutes. I got off at the last exit which is the Wakiki Zoo and aquarium. Actually this is the best area to spend the day because on the beach they have picnic tables, bathrooms and lots of tourists surfing (surf rental) and sunbathing. Then you have the tourists that are just enjoying the view of the ocean and watching the surfers riding the waves which are almost 30 ft high! The view of the beach is magnificent with its several I mean several shades of turqoise and blue, and the sand is powdery, light beige almost off white in some areas. Its a great place to build sand castles. I was tempted but had to tend to my writing.
It was interesting to see people in walkers, wheel chairs, some pushing their oxygen tanks.
I felt so proud of them because in spite of their handicaps they were determine to see Hawaii.
The look on their faces told me that they were really enjoying taking in the scenery.
There are several things that you can do in Wakiki. go surfing, boogie boarding, splash in the ocean, sun bathe, or just enjoy the view. You can also go to the zoo or aquarium or climb diamond head. You can also go to the Polynesian cultural center or the Bishop Museum
which is a heritage museum, natural science museum and dinasaurs musem all combined.
However for these you must take the bus or a taxi. But dont miss these events especially if
you have kids.It is worth the visit! There is also Pearl Harbor. To visit all of the exhibitions,
attractions and see all of the films it practically takes all day. It is worth it!
For food you can find anything that you want to eat in Wakiki and the street that runs
along Wakiki is Kalakaua. There is also a food court at the international market. Dukes at the Wakiki Outrigger is also a great place to eat or just have a drink while enjoying the view of the ocean. Like I say you just cant get enough of the view.
You can't leave Hawaii without buying souveneirs. There are a lot of souveneir shops including the shops at the international market where you can easily get lost. Be sure to look around first because I saw the same t-shirt for $10.00 going for 3.99 at another shop.. Always get extra souveniers. The prices were fantastic. Maybe because of economy? You will run into someone that will say wow you went to Hawaii? It nice to say yes and I brought you back a souveneir. The heart warming smile on their face is just priceless.
If you are going to Hawaii for the first time be sure to go to a Louau. It is a very cultural event. You can get ticket for these events at the hotels. The food, the dances, the costumes are all part of the Hawaiian heritiage. The performances are basically by Hawaiians and you can see the pride on their faces as they are performing. Plus it is a lot of fun. Everyone was happy.
Ask the hotel concierge about hula dance lessons. They are relatively inexpensive and a lot of fun. I certainly enjoyed myself! Oh and before you board the plane upon leaving be sure that you have had dinner. The flight we were on served us two crackers and a peice of cheese.
I was sure they were going to feed us dinner but we got what they call a snack. Luckily
I ate some of the Macadamia nuts that I had bought to give as a souvneir. Hey when you're
hungry you're hungy. Also make sure that you carry your own travel blanket or a warm jacket. On the way to Hawaii it was freezing in the plane and when I asked for a blanket the flight attendant told me that they no longer provide blankets or pillows. However they did on the return flight so just to be safe have something warm handy. All in all I had a great time!!!!!
