As I reflect on my day, I feel like Anderson Cooper--but no disaster here and no drama. Me just being interested in the people around me. Unreal! I think I could be a journalist.
So, I said goodbye to my friends and I headed to the beach near the resort. I was perfectly fine walking and taking some photos when this man offered to take my photo (see photos). His name is Orlando. He is from Costa Rica and he is the CEO of his own company--Thrifty Rental Cars. He and his family own a condo on the Playa de Conchal right by my resort. We walked a bit and he asked me why I was there....I told him: "I quit my job and I am traveling.....Costa Rica is my first stop
He related immediately! He is an attorney. When he started back in 1984, he was one of 3,000. Today, there are 20,000 attorneys Costa Rica! So...he did the math and the rental car business made sense. Good bye, Law...Hello, Thrifty....he employs 180 people in Costa Rica and is so happy! He said this to me: "You are on this earth one time, Jaimito. You are to be kind and do not abusive anyone or anything!"
I cannot make this up. He said this to me. Really? Folks enter into your life and share things that just make sense at the time. Orlando heard my story and wished me well and congratulated me on my journey and sticking to my guns....Pretty cool way to start the day!
I was not sure I would be able to top the walk on the beach. I proceeded to go to the main pool just for some relaxation. Enter the Canadians...Steve, Jesse, Matt, and Sarah.
DISCLAIMER: I am not on a back packing tour of Costa Rica. I know that! But, these folks are...unreal story
So....I go from the 25 year old Canadians to the Harvard/Cornell couple: Helen and Sam. Helen is a Harvard grad and Sam wore his Cornell hat with pride....Class of 1948. Awesome folks from Manhattan. Sam is on the Cornell board and I shared with him that I would be attending the Quill and Dagger alumni event in DC for Mr. Kiplinger...Sam is close with him and shared many a story. Very cool! Small, small world.....
Overall, great day of people, birds....oh the damn birds....see the video below for a laugh, and animals. The lizard? Not sure how it got up in the gutter but it did! Also, it is interesting to see how the resort turns over and the folks leave and new folks check in
Finally, I am curious why you get more cheers when you QUIT your job vs. when you get promoted or get a job? Does this make sense? So I tell folks that I quit my job and am traveling and I get this massive round of applause (somewhat exaggerated, but you get the idea)....I think I get it, but just seems odd to me.....ah well, think of Orlando...and his advice...You are on this earth one time!
