Hotel San Andes

Bidding farewell to girl, puke and baby at the bus terminal, we asked our
Ipiales taxi driver to take us to a hotel that had HOT WATER.  Arriving at
the Hotel San Andes,  never has one girl been more excited at the prospect
of hot running water. Showered, cleaned and triumphant from our amazing
journey we headed out to check out the scene.

Ipiales has a dangerous undertone but not as manic as Bogota.  The people
looked very different than other places in Colombia.  The Ecuadorian
influence given it was less than 10minuntes to the boarder.  Finding a very
cool bar (selling small expensive beers), we soaked up the atmosphere before
climbing into a bed that was made with springs not just foam (ooohhh the
luxury) and watching E! in Spanish on satellite TV.

After a rather disgusting breakfast in the hotel (I am getting tired of
eggs) we took a taxi to Santurio Las Lajas.  A church built in between a
crevice of two closely placed hills. The reason it was built in such an odd
spot being the result of a sighting of the Virgin Mary in the rock face.
The church was beautiful and the surrounding countryside stunning.  Ipailes
was well worth the visit for the fact that we seemed to be the only gringos
in such an interesting place.  Lonely planet doesn't seem to this (or Ibarra
in the next blog) justice.  Our decision to take this trip from Cali to
Quito is reaffirming itself every day.
