I'm starting this early because it's our first time on a yacht. What I've learned so far is that the captain is the boss for safety and other purposes, be nice because the living space is close, don't leave your stuff all over the room because there's no space, don't put anything through the toilet that doesn't go through your body, and the captain will determine basically where you are going. The crew finds out what your likes and dislikes are (food and bev) and tries to make your trip enjoyable. They take care of you, but are not entertainers.
Worrying about what to bring my daughter, Mia, 13, just said "bring what you bring to the beach". On a small informal yacht trip, she's right. We'll have a Ferreti Altura 640 yacht, 3 bedrooms, crew of 2. It's 21m (61 feet); here's the link w/pics http://www.ferretti-yachts.com/_vti_g2_gallery_aspx_idM_654-rpstry_20_--luxury-yacht-italian-boat-builder-motoryacht-sales.sphtml . So far, I know we're landing in Corfu, someone is supposed to pick us up (the transfer), and if that doesn't work out, I don't have a clue where the boat is, but Corfu can't be that big of a place. Still, I'd rather not land and know all the particulars, but too bad for me. I don't have a clue where we are cruising. Too bad for me again. I'm the kind of person that likes to have every detail of my journey laid out before traveling, so this is a pretty big thing. I did say that I wanted to tour Athens, so that is being taken into account, but I don't know when. Again, distressing, too bad for me. But the captain emailed me asking our likes and dislikes for food and beverages, and we have about four different views between my husband, me, son, 15 and daugther. We do have many things in common, we like good bread and we all like crepes. It will be interesting to see how that goes without being onerous on the crew.
The yacht belongs to my stepson. We're invited to his birthday party on the 22nd at his big new house in Bucharest, but I think because they'd be moving right before the party, they didn't want us around, so they suggested we take the boat. Being from the US and having such little time with the Romanian contingent, honestly, I'd have preferred to hang with the family, but that's the way it goes. Now we have to suffer through a Greek isle cruise and tour friggin Athens. How bad can it get? It's so very awful, I'll be able to check my emails, and Mia will miss the first week of official high school field hockey practice and Max will miss the first week of high school soccer practice. They are devastated (not). We return on the 24th, and she has practice at 9:30am the next morning and he has a game that evening. too bad for them. hee hee.
I was talking to Max the other day and asked him when he'd ever had his own room on a vacation, and neither he nor his sister ever had. Woohoo, can't wait!!
