Weather report: Nice start with a temperature of 21C and by
2pm it was 34C !! Talk about extreme weather, I was swimming in my clothes!

A short run (3 hrs) upto Itasca State Park where at Lake
Itasca is the source of the Mississippi River. I first went to the source and
walked over the Mississippi River. The kind people had been thoughtful enough
to put down rocks so I could cross. Beautiful setting as you can see by the
photo’s. After that I drove around the wildlife tour/road and all I saw was a chipmunk.
Took a couple of nice photo’s though. Then it was off to the Alton Fire Tower a
100 ft steel tower and climbed it! 138 steps and the last three series of steps
I could feel the tower swaying!! Needless to say I took a series of quick shots
and calmly bolted back down the stairs! The sign said a limit of 6 people
allowed on the tower but I could not imagine it myself with the swaying. I
would be there halfway up curled in the corner mumbling “mummy”.

Supper was extremely tasty. I had Walleye Pike which is a
first and ‘rice’. The rice had in it the baconest bacon I have ever tasted and
pieces of mushrooms (or at least what I thought they were). Always nice to
taste regional dishes even if they look dubious at first.

Tomorrow I start my journey on the
Great River Road.

Great Shots Malcolm! Just one quick editorial correction if I may. Walleye is what the yanks call our pickerel while pike is a pike. (I prefer pickerel myself as is it a firmer meat and only like pike if it is caught out of cold water. It is a weed feeder so can stay very close to the surface during the summer months.) Glad you enjoyed it/them though. I don't know if I ever told you but I work for two different flying in hunting and fishing companies. One flying out of Fauquer (small town just east of Hearst if you want to find it) and the other of Cochrane. If you ever get the urge to go up fishing some time, not sure if it is on your 'bucket list" or not, I can get you connected.

Have a great ride today.
